The BYD Seal U DM-i is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV developed by BYD for global markets, serving as the international counterpart to China's Song PLUS DM-i Champion Edition. Making its global debut at the Geneva Motor Show in February 2024, it marks BYD's sixth model introduced in Europe and stands as a flagship PHEV offering for overseas markets. As of May 2026, the Seal U DM-i is officially on sale across several European countries, carrying a starting price of around 33,205 GBP (approx. RM307,000) in the UK and starting at around 30,000 Euros post-subsidy in Spain. In terms of dimensions, the 5-seater C-segment PHEV SUV measures 4,775 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,670 mm in height, with a 2,765 mm wheelbase. The Seal U DM-i spearheads BYD's global strategy to accelerate new energy vehicle adoption via PHEV technology, with the "U" designating "Utility" to underline its focus as a practical family SUV.
The Seal U DM-i carries forward BYD's Ocean Aesthetics design philosophy, headlined by the distinctive "Ocean X" front fascia. Unlike its all-electric sibling with a closed-off grille, this PHEV variant features a borderless four-slat front grille flanked by "C"-shaped headlamp clusters for added visual presence. Along the sides, a crisp character line stretches across the body to convey an athletic stance, complemented by 19-inch alloy wheels and black wheel arch claddings. At the rear, it sports a continuous full-width LED taillight bar, complemented by gloss black lower bumper trim and a silver rear diffuser that enhance its sporty profile. Inside, the cabin mirrors the Ocean series styling, where extensive soft-touch upholstery and a crystal gear selector lend an upmarket feel that punches above its price bracket, complete with leatherette seats finished with intricate contrast stitching.
Underpinned by BYD's DM-i Super Hybrid technology, the Seal U DM-i is available in front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations. The powertrain pairs a 1.5L naturally aspirated or 1.5T turbocharged Xiaoyun PHEV-dedicated petrol engine with permanent magnet synchronous electric motors. The UK-spec FWD variant employs a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine producing around 80 kW, mated to a 145 kW front electric motor and an 18.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) Blade Battery, delivering a WLTP-rated pure electric range of 70 to 80 km. The AWD variant (offered in Thailand and select European markets) combines a 1.5T turbo engine (96 kW / approx. 131 hp) with dual front and rear electric motors (150 kW front, 120 kW rear) to generate a combined system output of 270 kW and 550 Nm of torque. It completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in just 5.9 seconds on to a top speed of 180 km/h, delivering a WLTC combined fuel consumption of just 1.2 L/100 km. With a full tank and a full charge, total cruising range reaches up to 1,080 km, making it well-suited for long-distance journeys. When running on low battery, the 1.5T variant returns a fuel consumption of roughly 6 to 7 L/100 km. For charging, DC fast charging takes 35 minutes for a 30% to 80% top-up, while AC charging takes around 2 hours (15% to 100%).
The chassis setup comprises front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link independent suspension, with AWD variants featuring an intelligent electric all-wheel-drive system. For the European market, dedicated drive modes including Snow and Desert modes have been added to improve versatility across slippery and challenging terrains. In ADAC testing in Germany, the FWD model showed modest traction on wet surfaces, displaying a tendency towards understeer and wheelspin alongside somewhat muted steering feedback. That said, the overall suspension setup is tuned for everyday ride comfort, absorbing road imperfections effectively, while the dual-motor AWD variant earned higher praise for its refined power delivery and superior grip levels.
Inside, the Seal U DM-i is powered by the DiLink intelligent infotainment system, featuring a standard 12.8-inch rotatable floating touchscreen (upgraded to a 15.6-inch unit on higher trims), accompanied by a fully digital instrument cluster and a flat-bottom multi-function steering wheel. It comes equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, full-scenario intelligent voice control, and an extensive suite of built-in infotainment apps. Flagship trims add a 360-degree surround-view camera system, a head-up display (HUD), a 10-speaker Infinity premium sound system, a panoramic sunroof, and dual wireless smartphone charging pads. On the comfort front, the front seats feature heating and ventilation, alongside electric adjustment with memory for the driver. The climate control system incorporates a heat pump to maximise driving range in cold weather. Overall, the cabin delivers a practical, well-appointed, and comfortable environment that holds a competitive edge over European rivals in the same segment.
The Seal U DM-i is built around an ultra-high-strength steel cage structure with hot-stamped steel reinforcing key sections, complemented by the inherent structural rigidity of the integrated Blade Battery pack. Built to European export standards aligned with Euro NCAP requirements, standard safety kit includes ABS, EBD, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), traction control, and a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS). In local C-IASI crash assessments in China, its domestic sibling earned an Acceptable (A) rating for structural crashworthiness. On the active safety front, the European specification features a streamlined Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) package compared to the domestic version; China's standard "God's Eye" C system is omitted in favour of a monocular camera setup that delivers standard Level 2 semi-autonomous driving features, including Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB). Front and rear parking sensors, Blind Spot Detection (BSD), and a 360-degree camera (on higher trims) come standard to deliver comprehensive driver support. In the event of a collision, the battery management system automatically triggers a high-voltage cut-off to protect vehicle occupants.
The Seal U DM-i has enjoyed strong market momentum since its European rollout. In August 2025, the PHEV version recorded 3,715 monthly registrations, making it the top-selling Chinese brand plug-in hybrid in Europe for the month. For the full year of 2025, cumulative European sales of the Seal U family (EV and PHEV combined) reached 72,667 units, overtaking established local rivals such as the Volkswagen Tiguan and Volvo XC60 to claim the top spot in European PHEV sales. In the UK market, monthly sales hit 2,550 units in January 2026, lifting its market share to 1.8%. Over in Spain, the SUV has emerged as a crowd favourite in the PHEV segment courtesy of its compelling post-subsidy pricing (around 30,000 Euros). In terms of media reception, German motoring club ADAC praised the Seal U DM-i for its strong value proposition, upmarket cabin, and comprehensive warranty package (6-year/150,000 km vehicle warranty and 8-year/200,000 km battery warranty), while noting areas for refinement in FWD traction, handling dynamics, and cold-weather charging speeds. Overall, backed by its efficient DM-i Super Hybrid powertrain and generous kit list, the Seal U DM-i has cemented a competitive presence in the global PHEV SUV arena.
